I once heard a great violinist 80 years into his career , as he tucked and tugged and wiggled a violin under his jaw exclaim "Someday I will learn to hold one of these things". That says it all: no matter how long we do this we will always search for that little improvement forever. It also begs the question of why are we teaching holding the violin or viola BEFORE we teach how to operate one? I believe that given a stable holder for the beginner we can teach more quickly the movements and tactile references that lead to successful tone production and high level technique. When some fluency is reached the student may then explore jaw and shoulder fitting options for traditional holding.
